What is damage over time?

Some heroes apply7c6936b41a020391de75438ca3c30c30damage over time, also known as DoT. DoT damage is dealt in repeated intervals, called ticks, over the duration of the effect.

The first tick occurs immediately when the DoT is applied. Additional ticks then occur at regular intervals until the effect ends.

A DoT effect continues until its timer expires or the affected enemy dies.

DoT damage is also affected by color advantage. For example, DoTs from red heroes deal more damage to green enemies.

A hero or unit can be affected by multiple DoT effects at the same time.

Note: Burn damage dealt over time by an area effect is not the same as the Burn effect. The area can keep dealing Burn damage for its duration, and overlapping areas can stack their damage. However, this does not apply the Burn effect unless the ability specifically says so, and it does not trigger effects that require Burn, such as Blackbeard’s Douse.
