How do I gain population?

Build62ba4514386d5d584efcbc6406b9b4faing residential buildings allows you to gain population. If you don't have enough free space in you city - try researching, then build new and better residential buildings instead of the old ones.

Each era has different types of residential buildings, which either grant more population or produce more coins. You can unlock them in the Research Tree. Some Great Buildings can also grant you more inhabitants, like the Tower of Babel, the Capitol or the Innovation Tower..

Note: more inhabitants also means more people to make happy. If you increase your population too much without having enough happiness, it may happen, that your citizens become unhappy. So, make sure that you always have enough happiness.
